Suck/lame: David Blaine

We continue our mission of clearly defining those people, things, ideas, thoughts, actions and other nouns and verbs of questionable lameitude with that crazy stunt guy, David Blaine.

Seriously, what’s the deal with this guy? Is he a magician? A lunatic? A professional dare taker? Whatever he is, Blaine has a way of convincing the public to care about his insane shtick. About 10 million people watched him fail to break the record for underwater breath-holding this week. (Yep, there’s a record for everything, isn’t there?) That’s not a huge amount of people compared to the audience for, say, “24,” but it’s about 9,999,998 more people than watched you that time in 5th grade when your friends dared you to drink pickle juice spiked with peanut butter and mustard. So there. And while Blaine didn’t break the record of 8 minutes 58 seconds, he did hold out for 7 minutes, which is impressive in a really, really stupid way. Ultimately, the question with Blaine is, “Who cares?” Yeah, we couldn’t do what he does. But we also aren’t capable of walking down the street with our pants around our ankles. Should we put that guy on TV, too?

So, is Blaine a media-savvy entertainer, or a dope that gets too much attention? In other words, is he lame? Vote by noon Friday.

I think his street magic is pretty impressive, but that was YEARS ago.

The current Blaine? SUCKS.

I was about to agree with Mark, because I think he raises a good point, but then I read the story about Johnny Lechner (a suck/lame candidate if there ever was one) at JSonline.com, and concluded there were too many parallels to ignore. Just because people pay attention to someone doesn't mean they shouldn't get called out for being f---ing stupid. Sucks.

I think he's a very very impressive magician. But the stunts are half bit. He's good

I vote suck. This nutcase broke off Josie Maran and currently breaks off Manon von Gerkan (Google her, you'll thank me).

I'm bitter and pissed he has access to women completely out of my galaxy.

I think that he's just annoying, if somebody wanted to take months, or even longer, out of their lives to do the training they could do the same thing that he's doing. I'm just sick of hearing about him, he's lame!

An idea: if, when you post the suck/lame poll, you set the date on the post to some random, future date, the post will remain at the top of your blog all the time. That way, if random people who don't regularly read your blog, come to vote - they will find it right away, instead of scrolling down through several other blogs - and maybe giving up because they can't find it.

Maybe. Anyone? Just a thought.

The best magicians tell you they are going to trick you and then trick you right in front of your face. Blaine is the worst kind of magician--one that pretends he's actually doing magic. Like David Copperfield, he pretends he actually possesses mystical powers (like levitation), only his hook is nonchalantness rather than cheesy theatrics. Give the audience some credit, please, Blaine. Sucks.
